Touch of Spice was
created post my tenure
on super yachts where I
worked for high net worth
clientele from all over the
world. I recognised that
Queenstown was not only
New Zealand's adventure
playground but also its
affluent playground -- people were investing a lot
of money in the region, they were building bigger
houses and demanding a higher level of service. No
one appeared to be catering to the needs of these
discerning clients and it was clear there was a market
that still hadn't been tapped.
I moved to Queenstown in 2005 and launched Touch
of Spice, Your Personal Concierge -- a luxury lifestyle
company available 24/7 targeting discerning clients
and providing a round the clock concierge service. The
services ranged from preparation of a holiday home,
itinerary planning for special guests, organising
activities for a corporate group, weddings or assisting
people with their real estate investments.
Touch of Spice is an internationally recognised luxury
tourism operator. What do you attribute to its success?
Our success story is simple -- it has been achieved by
basically "doing a great job"
. Exceeding expectations,
thinking outside the square and covering all bases are
three of our core values. We have created large scale
events in New Zealand for high profile clients and
government bodies but we equally excel at organising
a special dinner for two.
How has the business grown over the past decade?
During the past decade we have expanded from
being a luxury lifestyle company to a leading luxury
Destination Management company and New Zealand's
leading luxury Villa Specialist.
Two years ago I launched Touch of Spice Property
Management with Aaron and Bridget Murphy
enabling us to offer a complete turn-key solution in
Queenstown. Everything is in-house - marketing, sales,
management, maintenance and cleaning. We work as
a team even though we are two separate companies
and I am fortunate that Aaron and Bridget are so
passionate and hardworking which helps reinforce
Touch of Spice's excellent reputation. The addition
of the property management arm has enabled us to
grow the portfolio confidently and become the first
company in Queenstown to offer everything under
What criteria do you use when selecting properties for
the Private Villa Collection?
The villas in our portfolio are all in desirable locations
and destinations and feature award winning interior
design and architecture. We are not in the "holiday
home" market but promote luxury private villas
teamed with a wide range of concierge services
including private chefs and daily maids. It's our
personal touch and attention to detail that generates
us a high level of repeat and referral business.
Luxury travel is one of the fastest growing markets in
the world -- how do you stay on top of this sector's
The expectation from the sector is that you are the
ones with the knowledge so you need to know more
than they do -- which in the world of google and the
ability to source and search everything on line can be
challenging -- therefore you need to make sure you
know your product, know what is available and source
it fast. I keep reinforcing the need to cover all bases
and exceed all expectations 24/7.
What feedback do you receive from international
travellers about their experiences in New Zealand and
particularly the Southern Lakes region?
They love everything about New Zealand and the
beauty speaks for itself particularly in the Southern
Lakes. For many of our clients New Zealand is a dream
come true and they always want to come back and
often refer their family and friends to Touch of Spice.
What do you feel most proud about Touch of Spice's
We have been fortunate to have a steady rise in our
profile worldwide, gaining recognition as a prominent
luxury operator. This has put our Private Villa Collection
on the world stage and we have been published and
promoted in many high profile magazines such as
Condé Nast Traveler, Travel & Leisure and The Robb
Report. We have also received many tributes for our
award- winning collection.
If you were to organise an itinerary for yourself to
celebrate Touch of Spice's tenth anniversary-- what
would it include?
It's a surprise for the team but to mark our anniversary
we will be living a day in the life of a Touch of Spice
client -- no stone unturned, no step not covered.
The day out will include helicopters and curated
experiences, amazing food and exquisite wine,
adventure and adrenalin and a lot of luxury!
