The Audi quattro Winter Games NZ, ranked as one of
the world's top five international winter sports events,
could become an annual fixture from 2017 if a feasibility
study stacks up and key sponsors support the change
from the current biennial event.
Chairman Sir Eion Edgar says there is a lot of support
for the Southern Lakes based Games, which include
alpine and adaptive skiing, freeskiing, snowboarding,
cross country skiing and curling, to be held every year
and a review commissioned by Sport NZ is being
prepared by Ernst & Young.
"It is a very complex and major study but what we
know is that there is a high level of demand from
the southern venues, sports organisations and the
International Ski Federation.
He says it's imperative to look at the future of the
Games because "if we don't do it another Southern
Hemisphere country might step in and Winter Games
NZ would lose their advantage.
The likelihood of a new worldwide FIS Freestyle Super
Series is also driving the annual debate.
"FIS is promoting the concept of four international
events as part of the new series with two in North
America, one in Europe and one in Asia. Each
event would stage six World Cups in freeskiing and
snowboarding and Winter Games NZ is positioning
itself to be the Asian venue.
Sir Eion says funding will be the big issue in any
"Several of our sponsors have already indicated their
support and while much will depend on our major
backers Audi and the Government's Major Events
Development Fund we have already had a positive
reaction from the tourist industry.
