The Cardrona Valley's Snow Farm is New Zealand's
only cross country ski area and has earned a
reputation as a premier Southern Hemisphere ski
As well as 55 kilometres of scenic cross-country trails
catering to beginners, intermediate and advanced
skiers the ski area boasts two dedicated snowshoe
trails and a Snow Fun Zone with a sledding hill and
space for kids to play in the snow.
"Snow Farm's appealing quiet family atmosphere
separates it from the other ski fields in the region,"
says Snow Farm NZ General Manager Andy Pohl.
"Cross-country skiing is a sport of all levels and
much easier to pick up than traditional alpine skiing.
We have beginners packages which include rentals,
a trail pass and lessons from $90 per adult, which are
a perfect way to get into the sport."
He says the uncrowded runs also provide a relaxed,
non-threatening opportunity for children to learn the
intricacies of Nordic skiing.
"The trails are terraced amongst the stunning alpine
valleys of the Pisa Range," says Andy. "They take
skiers past rolling, snow-covered hills, peaceful
alpine streams and, naturally have amazing views of
Mt Aspiring and the Southern Alps."
Snow Farm also offers accommodation in a choice of
two backcountry huts or the Snow Farm Lodge. The
Meadow Hut is easily accessible for beginners and
takes less than two hours to ski out to while it takes a
day to reach the Bob Lee Hut.
Snow Farm Lodge is a fully-equipped 50-bed hotel
featuring ensuite rooms or shared facilities, as well
as a restaurant, café and bar and is the ideal option
for people wanting to stay near the main ski area.
Andy says Snow Farm's world-class events are
another big drawcard for the resort with the Merino
Muster on August 15 the premium winter event. The
Muster is divided into three race distances covering
7km, 21km and for the experts 42km. There is also a
popular Mini Muster for under 10-year-olds.
"We will also host the prestigious Audi quattro
